My Name’s Brett Freeman, and I Write “Ugly” Emails Your Subscribers Love To Read and Buy From
If you’ve found yourself on this page, I’m guessing you have some questions.
Like, “Who the hell is Brett Freeman?”
Or “Why on Earth would I want ‘ugly’ emails?”
And “Why is he asking all of these questions?!!?”
I’m glad you asked! 🤪
I’ve spent the last five years honing the art and science of writing for businesses of all shapes and sizes.
(A selection of the many businesses I’ve served.)
I’ve written thousands of unique emails from scratch for dozens of brands—from SaaS companies, supplement brands, and fitness coaches. That’s not including the daily emails I send to my own list.
And without tooting my own horn…
My emails slap!
I’m not the only one who thinks so:
“LOL this is great.” – Best-selling Author and Copywriter, Alin Dragu, responding to my email
Best two months for a client since we began sending “ugly” emails:
Kind Words From The Owner of The Agency Where I Earned My Stripes:
Now that you’re all buttered up… Let’s talk about these “ugly” emails!
Ugly emails are the opposite of what you see in your inbox:
They don’t include any fancy shmancy designs or artwork. At most, there may be a single image of one of your products or, when the time calls, a meme.
(I’m a personal fan of anything from The Office.)
But for the most part, the emails I write for my clients look like this:
There are a few reasons why these ugly emails are superior to the fancy schmancy emails that overpriced agencies create:
Fancy Schmancy emails destroy deliverability or send your emails on a one-way ticket to the promotions folder, where they get ignored or deleted.
Ugly emails are optimized for high deliverability and are the most likely to sidestep the promotions folder.
Fancy Schmancy emails feel transactional because all they focus on is the products or services you sell.
Ugly emails feel relational because they focus on your customers’ dreams and desires.
Fancy Schmancy emails generate unsubscribes because they feel like marketing.
Ugly emails generate replies, engagement, and sales because they feel personable.
Fancy Schmancy get forgotten about the second people close their inbox.
Ugly emails are remembered long after people close their inbox.
I could go on, but hopefully you get the point.
Now, I’ll be the first to admit I didn’t invent the idea of sending your audience ugly emails. It’s a concept widely used across internet marketing since before I got my first armpit hair.
But with that said…
Ugly Emails Have NEVER Been More Important for a Business Than Today
You see, AI lets any business whip up incredible-looking images and photos for their brand in seconds. The need for photographers, graphic designers, and editors has become almost obsolete. As a result, every business is now packing these AI designs into its email marketing.
As a result, potential buyers don’t know whether an image is real or AI-generated, which is contributing to growing distrust in businesses and brands.
Unfortunately, even businesses that don’t use images in their emails aren't totally safe. Many of them use AI to write the copy, too. Or worse…
They Hire An Agency That Uses AI!
Right now, thousands of hard-working business owners pay an “AI-Empowered” (whatever that means) Agency $10,000 per month to prompt Claude to write a month’s worth of emails in 5 minutes.
Then, the copywriter just checks that the email doesn’t sound so much like AI that the hard-working business owner notices before sending their next invoice.
As a copywriter who has spent years studying and honing my craft— and who labors for 30, 60, and sometimes even 90 minutes on a single email for my clients—I find this level of disrespect from my competitor a…
Disgrace.
Not only is it a disservice to their clients, but it is a huge middle finger to the art and science of email marketing.
Especially when agency owners plaster their lavish lifestyles all over Instagram and LinkedIn, lifestyles paid for by these hard-working business owners.
Mind my French, but…fuck that.
After several years of freelancing, I started Be Nefarious as an antidote to the plague of ever-growing marketing agencies maximizing profit margins at the expense of the businesses that trust them.
And unlike these other agencies that claim to be experts in everything — from PPC and SEO to TikTok ads and Web Design — Be Nefarious specializes in one thing and one thing only:
Writing “Ugly” Emails That Your Audience Loves to Read and Buy From
I’m happy to admit I’m no expert in all that other stuff.
As many of my peers hopped to become Creative Strategists the second that became the next big thing…I continued to write ugly emails for my clients.
It’s what I know and love. And without bragging too much, I’m shit hot at it.
Some wins include:
Doubling the email revenue of a New York City shirt brand (from $32,000 per month to $64,000 per month)
Regularly selling $15,000+ worth of low-bread in a single email
Building a 2,000-person strong waitlist for a fitness coaching program, which resulted in a £200,000 launch (£106,250 in the first 24 hours)
Then there are the replies my clients have gotten from their emails:
Obviously, replies aren’t cash. But they are a signal that your audience is reading and enjoying your emails, which makes them more likely to buy in the future.
But the writing is only one part of the service. You see..
Be Nefarious Does What Other Agencies Aren’t Willing To Do:
For example, other agencies take shortcuts by outsourcing industry and customer research to ChatGPT or Gemini. They’ll do this once, and whatever they found – regardless of whether it’s accurate – will make up the foundation of their entire marketing strategy for your business.
Be Nefarious gets their hands dirty by speaking to your customers (with your permission) along with your staff every week and month so we can maintain an up-to-date 360-degree view of your customers’ motivations to buy, why people cancel or complain, and what makes your business unique.
We’ll not only use our findings when writing your emails…
We’ll share them with your team to improve the performance of your ads, sales calls, website, and even customer support!
This is something all the great copywriters used to do to 10X or 100X a business…we’re simply carrying the torch to give your business the best chance possible of steady and sustainable growth for years to come!
Another area where Be Nefarious is willing to do what other agencies aren’t is not niching down.
Most agencies specialize in a certain industry – eComm, SaaS, coaching, etc. This allows them to systemize, streamline, and scale their business…but at the cost of their clients.
Because while their day-to-day operations might run smoothly…
You get stuck with canned emails that look, sound, and feel like carbon copies of their competitors. Which then stops them from standing out.
With Be Nefarious, you don’t have that problem because I happily work with businesses across a range of industries.
Each client gets unique emails that make their business stand out like a fart in an elevator (in a good way).
In fact, so long as you have:
A product or service that gets real results or improves people's lives
A list of at least 5,000 email subscribers
The bravery to stand out in your audience’s inbox
Then you’d be a great fit for Be Nefarious.
On top of me writing ugly and carrying out the above “extracurricular activities,” I’ll also…
Schedule the emails in the email platform of your choice
Keep your list clean, removing bots and chronic non-readers
Identify any opportunities to make more sales via automatic email sequences
Provide any email analytics and reports you or your team may need
(Note: Writing and/or rewriting these sequences can be arranged, if required.)
You may be wondering how much this service will cost.
Originally, I planned to offer only one tier: 30 emails for $9,900 per month.
However…
I appreciate that for many businesses, the idea of sending a daily email can already set off alarm bells in their minds.
They’re worried about “annoying” their readers. And while I could preach from the mountaintops that people don’t get annoyed by daily ugly emails and actually look forward to them…I also know the best way to convince you is to see it firsthand.
Another thing I must confess:
Until recently, the success I’ve achieved for my clients has come from working as a freelance copywriter or subcontractor for other agencies.
And while I’ve written for brands such as Dose, RP Strength, Boostly, and OMNIA Performance…I cannot use them as case studies for Be Nefarious. It would be unethical and a slap in the face of the agency owners who hired me.
This is incredible news for you!
Because, as both an incentive to overlook the lack of case studies and a way to get credible case studies fast…I’m offering 5 business owners a HUGE discount.
Meaning you won’t have to commit right away to paying me $9,900 per month.
In fact, you won’t even have to pay half of that.
Instead, you can start with me writing and sending ugly emails that your customers will love to read and buy from for as little as $2,000 per month.
This includes 8 emails per month PLUS scheduling, research, and list cleaning.
You can technically cancel whenever you want, although I ask all business owners for a handshake agreement of at least 3 months to give their audience enough time to become conditioned to the ugly emails.
But if you do pay 3 months up front, I’ll knock $750, taking you to just…
$1,750 per month.
There’s also a discount on the other packages if you decide you want more emails.
Your discounted rate will be protected against any future increases for as long as you remain a Be Nefarious client.
If you’re interested in sending ugly emails your audience love to read and buy from, send an email to [email protected], and we’ll arrange a short call to discuss the specifics.
If, however, you have a question…I’ve answered what I predict the most common ones are in the below…
FFAQ
(Future Frequently Asked Question)
Question: What happens once I sign up?
We’ll arrange a 60-90 minute kick-off call so I can get an idea of your ideal customers, what you offer, and your values. From there, I’ll do my own research, review any materials you share, and talk to customers.
I’ll then begin writing and scheduling emails to go out starting the following week.
Question: Do I get to see the emails before they go out?
Yes. Given the fast turnaround required in the first month, you’ll receive the emails 3-5 days before they’re due to go out. From the second month, you’ll receive all the emails at least 2 weeks before.
If you want to review them beforehand, cool. I’m happy to make any minor changes, with the goal of you being comfortable going out with your review.
Question: What do you need from me?
In short, as much as you’re willing to give me.
I need access to your email platform to schedule the emails. On top of that, I’d ideally get access to any existing market research you have, surveys, product information, private communities you may have, your support desk, recordings with clients, etc.
If possible, I’d also get access to a list of your customers so I can reach out to arrange calls (if they’re open to it) — you’ll be CC’d on all communications for transparency, and will get access to any notes/recordings taken from the calls.
Question: I plan to launch a new program or service; what happens?
I send more emails. Assuming your launch is a reasonable length (3-7 days), you may need to email every day — sometimes more. I can happily write these emails for an additional fee.
Question: Can you guarantee any results?
No. Results are dependent on the quality of email subscribers, what you sell, and your audience’s existing relationship with you.
I offer a one-week cooling-off period. If, for some strange reason, you’re unsatisfied with the first batch of emails and wish to part ways, I’ll give you a full refund.
Send an email to [email protected] to get started, and we’ll arrange a short call to discuss the specifics.
